About Us (Education)

Fondazione Azzurra is a non-profit organization founded in Los Angeles in 2006 for the purpose of preserving and promoting the study of the Italian language and culture throughout Southern California. Our intent is to assist in the establishment and maintenance of Italian language educational programs in private and public schools. The foundation has petitioned to receive grants from the government of Italy in support of its mission and, as such, will operate under the supervision of the Education Office of the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles.
The foundation has on-going relationships with private and public schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District providing assistance in developing Italian language classes and offering needed teaching materials. In order to assure the continuity of the program, Fondazione Azzurra may suggest qualified and highly trained instructors of the Italian language, upon request.
The foundation has produced a document, Fondazione Azzurra for the Development of Italian as a Foreign Language in Southern California (pdf), an educational project which proposes a guideline for the teaching of Italian as a foreign language in schools and institutions which offer enrollment from grade K through grade 12th. The purpose is to maintain and to develop the use of the Italian Language where it is already spoken by native speakers who are California residents, as well as to awaken a sensibility towards Italian as a less commonly taught language which, however, permeates the world of culture, the arts and many professions.
Finally, Fondazione Azzurra’s highest goal is to sensitize youth to the development and enrichment of intellectual capital through the exposure to a different language and culture, thus providing students with openings to other communities of scholars and preparing them for an active role in the process of cultural growth and exchange between civilizations.
